Two soldiers killed after Jaish terrorists storm Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Sunjwan, six injured
At least three terrorists on Saturday barged into an army camp in Sunjwan area of Jammu and Kashmir and opened fire, news agency ANI reported. Two junior commissioned officers lost their lives in the attack, while six others, including one of the officer's daughter, were injured. A colonel rank officer was among those injured in the terror attack, Jammu and Kashmir Parliamentary Affairs Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri today said,
Jammu IGP SD Singh Jamwal said that the militants launched an attack on Saturday morning. The total number of terrorists were yet to be ascertained. "At around 4:55 am suspicious movement was noticed by the santri; santri bunker was fired upon and they retaliated. Two people, one Hawaldar and his daughter have been injured in the incident. The operation is on," Jammu IGP Jamwal told ANI. A few terrorists were holed up in one of the family quarters of the building, a senior official said.
District authorities have asked schools within 500 meters radius of the camp to stay closed.
As per news agency ANI, Indian Air Force para commandos were airlifted to Jammu from Udhampur, this morning in light of the terror attack at the army camp. Another aircraft had also been deployed to airlift para commandos from Sarsawa.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, "Deeply disturbed by the terrorist attack in #Sunjwan today. My heart goes out to the injured & their families."
On the other hand, security was beefed up in Udhampur and Pathankot air base in light of the attack on the army camp in Sunjwan.
Home Miniter Rajnath Singh has been briefed about the siuation by the Jammu and Kashmir DGP and has also directed ministry officials to keep a close watch on the situation, reports said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a three-country West Asia tour, and Defence Nirmala Sitharaman have also been briefed about the situation.
One of the injured soldier, who later succumbed to his wounds, was identified as junior commissioning officer, Madan Lal Choudhary, according to a media report.
The attack is believed to be 'fidayeen' in nature, carried out by JeM militants, and is the first such attack in Jammu and Kashmir this year. The army camp is situated at the outskirts of Jammu and is spread across vast area of land. Several residential quarters as well as schools in the campus. The terrorists reportedly gained entry through the rear-side of the camp.
Intelligence inputs had warned an attack on the army or security establishment by Jaish-e-Mohammed in view of the death anniversary of Afsal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013.
